Exporting cable lengths from AutoCAD

CurrentProof · Infrastructure calculator guide

Before you export

Draw each cable route as a polyline on its own layer, with the layer name ending in the circuit reference used on your CurrentProof drawing, for example E-PWR-FC1 for circuit FC1. A route drawn as several polylines on the same layer is fine, CurrentProof adds them together.

Lengths are read from the drawing as drawn, in plan. Vertical drops, risers and terminations are covered by the allowance percentage on each circuit in CurrentProof, which defaults to 10%. Check it suits the installation.

Export with Data Extraction

  1. Type DATAEXTRACTION at the command line.
  2. On the Begin page, choose Create a new data extraction and save the extraction file when asked.
  3. On the Define Data Source page, choose Select objects in the current drawing, then select the route polylines.
  4. On the Select Objects page, tick Polyline only.
  5. On the Select Properties page, tick Layer and Length.
  6. On the Refine Data page, untick Combine Identical Rows. CurrentProof rejects combined rows, because their length may not be the total.
  7. On the Choose Output page, tick Output data to external file and save it as a CSV file.
  8. Finish.

Import into CurrentProof

Open your drawing in the Infrastructure calculator and choose Import lengths from drawing. Pick the CSV file, then set the reference column to Layer, the length column to Length, and the unit to the unit your drawing is drawn in, usually millimetres. Leave Count as the Count column.

Before anything changes, CurrentProof shows you which circuit each layer matched, the new length beside the current one, and any row it could not use with the reason. Circuits not in the file keep their current length. Apply when the review is right.

Each imported length is marked as from the drawing, with the file name and date, until you change it by hand.
